02. biography
• (birth to age 17) willa jameson was born to michael and elizabeth jameson in 1981. her father was a detective for los angeles and her mother was a homemaker. although her father tried not to bring his work home with him, sometimes it happened. it was difficult for him to leave his work at the door, especially when it involved children because he had willa at home and he saw her face everywhere. by the time she was fourteen, her father had given up being a detective and taken a desk job where he saw less of the daily horrors that came with his previous position. willa didn't know any differently, though. although he was strict, there was never any indication to her that her father was tortured by the lives he couldn't save and the kids who died or were never found. willa was a bright child and she enjoyed school. she made friends easily and formed book clubs and crafting clubs to express her hobbies. when she was sixteen, her best friend went missing. twelve days later, her brutally mutilated corpse turned up inside the crawl space of her house. the murder was pinned on the girl's father and he was put away for several life sentences, although he claimed his innocence at every hearing and trial. his story never changed and there was very little evidence to link him to the crime, but the jury convicted him anyway. this would be the start not only of willa's obsession with true crime, but with the justice system.

• (age 17) she graduated the valedictorian of her class and chose ucla law school as her preferred college. although she recieved a few grants and scholarships, she had to take out considerable loans to make it work. she had every confidence that she could find a job after she graduated and that the loans would be paid off in no time.

• (age 17-24) she attended ucla and earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice then went on to law school for another three years. during her years in law school, she participated in a clerkship program part-time through a prestigous law firm in the hopes that she might add something to her resume. she passed the california state bar with flying colors at the end of her schooling and began looking for jobs.

• (age 24) she met jared jacobson in her last year of law school at the clerkship where she was working. he was a couple of years her senior, working his way up the ladder to partner. she learned later that she was pregnant and chose not to tell him. she was working 80 plus hours a week, had no money and got very little sleep. she knew that this was an inopportune time for a child and that jared would just see it as a burden for both of them.

• (age 25) she moved to sacramento, california a month later to work for a firm there. she carried the child to term and then gave him up for adoption. she chose an open adoption so that she could have the opportunity to see her child when she was ready.

• (age 26) a year later, when things were not going very well at the firm, and no one seemed to want to take her seriously, she began looking for other jobs across the country. she wanted a change and she wanted to see if the business was the same on the east coast. she found a firm in boston willing to hire her on the condition that she could pass the masachusetts state bar exam. she studied and passed with ease.

• (age 28) two years into working at Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway, willa met single mother, theodora nika and began a relationship with her that was torrid from the beginning. they were very attracted to one another but they tended to vie for the more dominant position in the relationship. as both women were quite independent, it often found them fighting. at the time, thea was fighting for her inheritance and because willa cared for her, she represented her and helped her to get back what was rightfully hers. however, a few months later, they mutually called off the relationship, though they remained good friends and had the occasional hookup.

• (age 30) during her stint at Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway, just before she left to work for an exclusive client who kept her as part of his legal staff, she represented a woman named claire johnson who was being sued over an accident that happened in her shop. it was a classic case of fraud and willa helped bring the culprit to justice. she also worked the case pro bono because she knew that claire didn't have the money, not only to pay the inordinate fraudulent charges the "victim" asked for, but she didn't have it to pay a lawyer, either. she often took on cases where she knew that the defendant was innocent and in need of help. she considered it her charity for the month. she forged a friendship with claire afterward, when the woman would bring baked goods or other things to the busy lawyer's office and sit for a chat or two. claire seemed like a lonely person, and in willa's busy line of work, she hadn't had an opportunity to make many friends herself. she welcomed the chats and the baskets of bakery items that they shared between them. it was a surprise to her, though, when claire suddenly died. it wasn't sudden, however. she'd been dying of kidney cancer for two years, she had just never said anything to willa. she was even more surprised to find that another lawyer had arranged her will and that she had left her shop to her. willa didn't know the first thing about running a shop, let alone a sex shop, but she was growing tired of the long thankless hours she put in. except for one client, she quit the business and decided to see what she could do about keeping claire johnson's shop alive and kicking.

• (age 36) ever since she left the law firm and settled into the routine of running a shop, she has been thinking more and more about the child she gave up for adoption all those years ago. although she knows the adoption was open at the time, the adoptive parents hadn't kept in touch with her and she was unsure of where her son was. the adoption agency, she found out, was defunct and she was no longer able to access the files and information she needed. she would have to hire a private investigator to find out where her son was and how she could see him, if she was even allowed to anymore.

personality the five best words to describe willa on the surface would be aloof, strong, listener, funny and girlie. to strangers and those who don't know her well, she tends to come off as aloof, but not unfriendly. she just keeps herself at a distance, afraid to become too involved and potentially lose the friendship or the person themselves. she has a strong, no nonsense attitude and doesn't take direction very well. she is a good listener and will always lend an ear to someone who wants to talk. she is also not shy about sharing her own personal experiences, as long as they aren't some of the more painful ones. very few people know about her son. she likes to crack jokes, enjoys memes and comedy with the best of them, but a lot of it is to keep herself from having to think about or talk about some of the more painful things in her past.

the five best words to describe the willa that her good friends and lovers know would be tender, motherly, optimistic, stubborn and fragile. willa has a soft spot for the people who have really stuck by her and gotten to know her, whether she wanted them to or not. she cares deeply for people and tends to cling to them, but tries not to because she's always afraid at the back of her mind that something bad will happen. she's motherly and is not afraid to tell things like they are. she will give advice and be supportive, but she doesn't sugar coat things if she knows that a hard truth will help more than sweet words. the last ten years have proved that things can go right for her, so she's been stubbornly optimistic that she'll have a happy ending in her life and tries to look for the rainbows instead of the thunderclouds. willa is as stubborn as they come. she will not do something if she doesn't want to, and she automatically doesn't want to if she's told to do it. she's a lot nicer about it and will consider it far longer if someone asks nicely. but even a joking "smile" or "shut up" will result in her refusing and saying "don't tell me what to do". underneath it all, though, willa is fragile.

facts • her parents are still alive and living in los angeles, although her father's health has been on the decline the last couple of years.
• she doesn't know what became of her son, but she's spent the last year looking for him. he would be eleven now, and she just wants to know that he's alright.
• love scares the shit out of her. the three great loves of her life all abandoned her or died. now, she can't help but hold people at arm's length just in case they decide to split, too.
• she dislikes being told what to do so much that even if it's a friendly suggestion, her immediate reaction is "no".
• she runs her shop with the help of a couple part-time clerks.
• she continues to practice law, but in a more private setting. she will do pro bono work for friends, though.
